Oil Change | Yates Wrecker

How Important Is Having Your Oil Changed?

Summer heat can be very straining on your vehicle, especially your engine. High temperatures can really put wear and tear on your engine cylinders so it’s important to keep your engine lubricated and oiled up. It’s recommended to have your oil changed every 3,000-5,000 miles. If you operate your vehicle under “severe duty” conditions, you should consider changing the oil more frequently, because you’re working the engine that much harder. Here, Doug Yates Towing & Recovery discusses the importance of having your oil changed especially during the warmer seasons.

Keep You Engine Clean

When oil flows into the engine from other areas, dirt and other particles begin to build up within the engine. If you are not changing your oil routinely, sludge will begin to accumulate. In more rural areas, dust and other particles are more susceptible to entering your engine. Changing your engine oil as well as replacing your filters on a timely basis, will get any of these harmful bits of dirt and debris out of your engine before they do any damage.

Better Gas Mileage

Without proper oil changes and maintenance, all that dirt and grim discussed earlier will build up inside your engine causing friction. Friction within your engine is never a good thing. It can cause decreased engine performance and reduce maximum fuel economy. Making sure that your engine always has clean oil in it will help reduce friction, allowing your engine to run more efficiently.

Longer Engine Life

Engine oil is essential to your vehicle. It lubricates and protects your engine and many of it’s critical parts from further damage. By making sure that you have your oil and filter changed according to your owner’s manual, you will be keep your engine clean and protected. This can save you time, money and stress. A regularly scheduled oil change will help ensure that you will be driving around in your vehicle for years to come.

Protects Other Engine Parts

Inside your engine there are many moving parts which make your engine run. These parts include the crank shaft and the connecting rods. These rods control the pistons inside your engine’s cylinders. There is also another piece called the camshaft which assists in opening and closing the vehicle’s exhaust valves. Having clean oil in your vehicle’s engine is crucial in keeping these components well moving and running properly.

Vehicle Emissions Test

Passing an emissions test is all about how many particles called hydrocarbons are being sprayed into the atmosphere. If you fail to change your oil on a regular basis, dirty oil causes a build up of these hydrocarbons inside areas of your engine. These then get burned up, causing more of them to be released into the air through the vehicle’s exhaust. Not only will changing your oil on time help you pass this required emissions test, you will also be polluting less into the environment.

Better Engine Performance

Over time, old oil breaks down due to high levels of heat. This causes it to loses its viscosity as well as its ability to lubricate the engine cylinder walls. Essentially, the dirtier the oil is, the harder it is to function properly. That dirt and sludge can build up over time inhibiting the oil from getting to where it needs to go. Ultimately the engine will run less efficiently because of it’s build up. This is why it is essential for you to have a routine oil change for your vehicle.
